Tricks to maintain your Lawn in Calgary

Updated: Mar 31, 2023

Here are a few additional tips for maintaining a healthy and attractive lawn:

Test your soil:

Knowing the pH and nutrient levels of your soil can help you determine which fertilizers and amendments to use.

You can purchase a soil test kit or have a soil sample tested by a local extension service.

Over seed thin areas:

If your lawn is patchy or thin, consider over seeding to fill in bare spots. This involves planting grass seeds in areas where grass is sparse. Use mulch: Mulch can help to retain moisture in the soil, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Spread a thin layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and flower beds to protect the roots and improve the health of your plants

Use a grass catcher:

If you have a grass catcher attachment for your mower, use it to collect grass clippings as you mow. This can help to reduce the amount of grass clippings left on your lawn, which can create a breeding ground for pests and diseases. Keep the mower blades sharp: Sharp mower blades will give a clean cut to your grass, which is essential for maintaining a healthy lawn. Dull blades can result in jagged, torn grass that is more prone to disease and pests. Remember, in the summer, you can put short grass clippings on the lawn to protect plant roots if needed. Remember, you shouldn't cut any more than a third of a grass blade and cut at 2.5 inch -3 inch in summer.

Mow at proper height and different direction each week or two.:

Different grass types have different recommended mowing heights. Be sure to set your mower to the proper height for your grass type to ensure that it is being cut at the optimal length.
