How to Snow shovel heavy snow in Calgary

Here are some tips for shovelling heavy snow in Calgary:

snow shovelling

Dress warmly in layers and wear appropriate footwear to keep your feet dry and warm. Start shovelling early in the morning, when the snow is still fresh and easier to shovel. If needing to go out more than once if it is a blizzard to make the snow less heavy during the day.

If the snow has already frozen or compacted, you may need to use an Ice Chipper or other equipment to break it up. Don't use certain ice melts on your driveways or property as it may chip or deteriorate the cement

Use a shovel with a wide blade and a handle that is comfortable for you to grip. A plastic blade may be easier to use than a metal one, as it is lighter and will not scratch surfaces such as your driveway or deck. If Snow is heavy you can also use a scoop shovel which makes things easier at times.

Take breaks as needed to prevent fatigue and overexertion. Shovelling heavy snow can be physically demanding, so it is important to pace yourself and listen to your body. Make sure you don't dehydrate yourself, drink water.

Shovel in small sections, rather than trying to clear the entire driveway or walkway at once. This can help prevent fatigue and make the task more manageable. If doing a driveway, go down centre and shovel on each side.

Lift the snow with your legs, rather than your back, to reduce the risk of injury. Bend your knees and use your leg muscles to lift the shovel, rather than relying on your back.

Push the snow to the side of the driveway or walkway, rather than trying to lift it over your head. This can help reduce the strain on your body.

By following these tips, you can make the task of shovelling heavy snow in Calgary safer and more manageable.
